Newsletter: Honda Unveils Miimo, a Robotic Lawn Mower

Honda has finally released its first commercial robotic product for domestic use, and it’s hardly what you’d think it would be. With the spotlight constantly on Honda’s ASIMO Robotproject, it turns out the Japanese automaker was working on a robotic… lawn mower.

Out in Europe, there is apparently a “fast-growing European robotic lawn mower market” according to Honda. The Miimo was designed to help maintain a beautiful lawn without having to mow it yourself. According to Honda, the Miimo is “the ultimate time and labor saving device, once installed it needs minimal human interaction when working to ensure a beautifully cut lawn, every day, for the length of the mowing season.”

Honda has equipped its robotic lawn mower with a ‘continuous cutting’ system that mows a minimal 2-3mm of grass at a time, several times each week. In addition, it cuts in a random pattern which results in less stress on the grass, healthier growing patterns, and reduced moss and weeds. What’s really strange is that the clippings the Miimo creates are so small that they’re just dispersed back onto the lawn acting as a natural fertilizer.

On the technology side, the Miimo is powered by a high-performance, lithium-ion battery that is self-charging and returns to the docking station on its own when it needs to recharge.

Undoubtedly it’s a great use of the technology that Honda has been working on, but all of us wish its first commercial robotic product would be something… cooler and more useful.
