The benchmark for the handling of the ScionFR-S has always been the PorscheCayman. While some have gone so far as to say the Scion is superior, the men behind it are not yet satisfied.
Two of the people who deserve much of the credit for the Scion FR-S are chief engineer Tetsuya Tada and assistant chief engineer Yoshinori Sasaki. The two men recently visited Scotland to test some slight revisions to the car’s shock absorbers and the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
“Some people think this car oversteers too much,” says Sasaki in an interview with Top Gear, though he disagrees, commenting that, “it has a very neutral balance.”
Tada makes it clear the goal for the dynamics of the car are indeed top of class. “We were aiming – always – for the Porsche Cayman.” He is not referring to grip or exit speed but simply how much fun the driver has behind the wheel. When developing the car they asked the same question of their test driver after every set of tests, “did you enjoy it?”
Of note, the engineers were using a ToyotaGT86 for test purposes so while these new parts will likely make it on to the second year of the GT86, American availability is not guaranteed. It would however fit the FR-S policy of continuous improvement, like what is used on the Nissan GT-R.
