Ever since 2013 Cadillac ATS development began, the automaker made it clear the target was the 3 Series. On the latest episode of Head 2 Head, the new Cadillac ATS finally meets the car it was built to compete with. Jonny Lieberman analyzes how similar the two heavyweights are on paper, but then takes them out on winding roads to discover whether the ATS has what it takes to dethrone the dominating 3 Series.
Both cars are front-engine, rear-drive sports sedans that are within an inch of one other in wheelbase, length, width, and height. The test cars are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 mated to a six-speed manual, however, the ATS has more grunt with 272 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Even so, the 328i beat the ATS in the 0-60 mph test by 0.5 seconds thanks in part to the ATS’ gearing. Neither car has much of an advantage over the other, but then again, staged dynamic tests can only tell so much about a car.
Driving a car on your favorite winding road reveals so much more about a car, and that’s exactly where Lieberman takes the pair. He evaluates the steering, shifters, chassis, and throttle response, and makes a decision about which car he’d rather own. Can the ATS beat the king of the segment? Find out by watching the newest episode of Head 2 Head in the video below.
