At this year’s annual Michigan State Police cop-car testing regimen, Ford vehicles once again received several honors. The Explorer-based Ford Police Interceptor Utility and the Taurus-based Ford Police Interceptor and both set faster lap and acceleration times than competing Chevrolet and Dodge police vehicles.
Earlier this year, we also put the three major police cars — the Dodge Charger, Ford PI, and Chevrolet Caprice — through their paces in an episode of The Downshift. And while our comparison allowed us to pick our favorite of the three cop cars, the Michigan State Police perform much more rigorous and tightly-regimented testing.

Ford has made the Police Interceptor available with a 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 engine, expanding on the existing 288-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 and 365-hp, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 options. Dodge now offers Charger Pursuit models powered by the 5.7-liter V-8 engine with all-wheel-drive.
While the Michigan State Police won’t release its full report on the latest round of vehicle testing for some time, Ford has revealed the winning numbers for its cop cars. The Police Interceptor sedan with the twin-turbo EcoBoost engine set the fastest acceleration times of all the cars tested by the MSP. The 365-hp car recorded a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.75 seconds, a 0-to-80-mph time of 9.08 seconds, and a 0-to-100-mph time of 13.77 seconds. The next quickest car, according to Ford, was a Dodge Charger with the 5.7-liter engine, which needed 6.08 seconds to reach 60 mph.
“These fast closing-in speeds are critical for first responders and law enforcement professionals,” Ford explained in a statement.
The sedan also set the fastest overall and fastest average lap times in MSP testing at the two-mile Grattan Raceway in Michigan. The Police Interceptor EcoBoost model set a fastest lap time of 1:34.6 and an average lap time of 1:34.98 seconds. The next-quickest car, according to Ford, was the Chevrolet Caprice police car with an average lap time of 1:35.36.
Ford’s newest police car, the Interceptor sedan powered by a 3.7-liter V-6, snagged the shortest braking distance, stopping from 60 mph in 128.2 feet — just 0.3 feet better than the next-best finisher, a Dodge Charger.

The good news wasn’t limited to Ford’s sedans: the Police Interceptor Utility also scored the quickest acceleration times of all police SUVs tested. Its 0-to-60-mph time of 7.96 seconds and 0-to-80-mph time of 12.74 seconds beat the Chevrolet Tahoe police car by 0.08 seconds and 0.73 seconds, respectively. The Ford SUV is equipped with a 304-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 engine and all-wheel drive.
The Police Interceptor Utility also set the quickest average lap time around Grattan Raceway for police SUVs with a fastest overall lap of 1:40.1 — over a second quicker than the fastest lap set by a Chevrolet Tahoe.
“This year’s testing by the Michigan State Police once again proves Ford Police Interceptors are industry leaders,” Ford Police Interceptor marketing manager Lisa Teed said in a statement. We say the results are further proof that there’s no sense in trying to outrun any of the industry’s newest police cars.
