Hot on the heels of an earlier leak of the Bentley Continental GT3 race car, the British automaker has officially announced its return to motorsports.
10 years ago, at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, Bentley unveiled its Continental GT concept that would forever change the automaker’s image. Now 10 years later, Bentley looks to change its image once again with the official debut of its FIA-approved concept Continental GT3 race car at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
The GT Speed-based race car is currently being developed by a dedicated motorsport team at the company’s factory in Crewe, England. It will be the automaker’s return to the race track since its historic sixth Le Mans victory in 2003.
The Continental GT3 builds on the fantastic platform that the GT Speed already is, custom-tailored for the track with the adoption of a rear-wheel drive chassis in accordance to regulations. The Continental GT3 concept has already received full support of the FIA and will be returning to the world of motorsports towards the end of next year.
The British automaker plans on competing in various motorsport events with its new GT3 race car including 24-hour marathons. The development of the race car is headed by Bentley’s Director of Chassis, Powertrain and Motorsport, Brian Gush. Development of the Continental GT3 will continue over the coming months as it starts to get ready to debut in 2013.
