The refreshed European-spec 2013 Honda CR-Z dropped at the Paris Motor Show with updated sheetmetal, a new lithium-ion battery pack, more power and, perhaps most importantly, a boost button.
The 2013 Honda CR-Z now packs 135 ponies and 140 lb-ft of torque, up from 122 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque in the U.S.-spec 2012 CR-Z. The extra power is courtesy of changes to the 1.5-liter four-pot’s variable valve timing system and ECU, and the change from a nickel-metal hybrid (NI-MH) battery to lithium ion. Honda says the added power doesn’t adversely affect fuel economy.
With the new power, Honda has added a KERS-like boost button to the 2013 CR-Z. Officially dubbed the “Plus Sport” (S+ for short), the new boost system is available when the battery is more than 50 percent charged by hitting the S+ button on the steering wheel. The system then provides up to 10 seconds of boost once the accelerator is mashed to the floor. Needless to say, we expect the new S+ system to play a pivotal role in the next “Fast and the Furious” flick.
The other changes to the Euro-spec 2013 Honda CR-Z are mostly cosmetic. As we’ve previously reported, the new CR-Z gets a new front bumper and a revised grille that no longer includes horizontal trim bars. The CR-Z also gets LED daytime running lights, and a revised rear fascia.
The 2013 CR-Z’s cabin is also revised with updated seat and door lining material, and new door pockets. Red stitching on the steering wheel, gear knob, seats, and door trim will also be available as an option. Honda says the CR-Z’s 0-62 mph time falls from 9.7 seconds to 9.0 seconds, though when we tested a 2011 Honda CR-Z with a six-speed manual it ran from 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds.
No word from Honda yet on which Euro-spec 2013 Honda CR-Z changes we’ll see on the U.S. model.
