Add the upcoming Opel Adam to the list of premium, A-segment microcars entering the international automotive market. Like most cars in the segment, what the Adam lacks in oomph it attempts to make up for with quirky styling and loud colors.
The Opel Adam makes its official world debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show and is set to go on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2013. As previously reported, it will launch with three naturally aspirated, inline-four gas engines: a 1.2-liter rated at 70 hp; a 1.4-liter rated at 84 hp; and a 1.4-liter rated at 100 hp. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for all three engines and we assume an automatic may be available. Opel plans to launch another engine with turbocharging, direct injection, and a six-speed manual.
The Adam’s main competitors include the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500, both of which offer a dizzying amount of personalization options. The Adam will be no different, launching with three trim levels that have unique descriptors: Adam Jam (unconventional, fashionable, and colorful), Adam Glam (elegant, refined, and sophisticated), and Adam Slam (energetic and sporty). Customers will have their choice among three roof colors, more than two dozen exterior paint shades, and a long list of interior options. Other features include a seven-inch touch screen that integrates with Apple and Android smartphones, a park assist system that automatically parks the car, and stop-start technology.
General Motors won’t say if the Adam will make it to our shores, but Detroit editor Todd Lassa recently wondered if it would do well here rebadged as a Buick. His reasons? It’s largely based on the 2013 Chevy Spark and could further attract the younger crowd to the brand. Do you agree?
