Volkswagen has just revealed one of the world’s most efficient cars, a Golf BlueMotion concept powered by a new 1.6-liter TDI netting itself nearly 74-mpg.
The vehicle is on display at the 2012 Paris Motor Show and even though the German automaker is calling it a concept, it’s pretty much a production model set to go on sale in Europe starting next summer. It’s being billed as the most fuel-efficient Golf ever built with a fuel consumption of 3.2 liters per 100 km which calculates to about 73.5-mpg in the US.
According to the automaker, the Golf BlueMotion has a theoretical range of 971 miles thanks to its new 1.6-liter TDI with 109-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It’s also lighter than its predecessors and adopts several new features like low rolling resistance tires, longer gear ratios, a stop-start system, and battery regeneration mode.
Compared to the standard Golf model, the BlueMotion is also 15 mm lower, sports a roof spoiler, and cooling tweaks to fully optimize the vehicle. The Golf BlueMotion will also be offered in two trim levels: Trendline or Comfortline.
