A turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine acts as a traction motor driving the front wheels, and also serves as a generator supplying the electric motor at the rear wheels. Combined output of the system is 190 hp, which BMW says is good enough to accelerate the Concept Active Tourer from 0-62 mph in less than eight seconds. Recharging the lithium-ion battery is done via regenerative braking or a plug. The concept’s lithium-ion battery pack can be charged externally via a 220-volt wall charger, and can drive the car on electric-only power for about 12 miles.
A multicolor head-up display, eight-inch infotainment screen, and a 10.3-inch customizable screen in place of a traditional instrument cluster are highlights in the Concept Active Tourer’s interior. A panoramic sunroof changes transparency at the push of a button, much like Mercedes-Benz’ own Magic Sky Control system. A “Seismic Surf” iPad app uses driving data to create an interactive game for rear-seat passengers, in which the driver can affect gameplay by altering their driving style. For all the latest news, photos, videos, and much more direct from the 2012 Paris Motor Show floor, head to our 2012 Paris Motor Show coverage page here.
